Title: Help with Mining Rig
Post by: ipaint on July 31, 2013, 07:30:17 PM
I was talking to friend of mine and showed him GLDcoin. He wants to buy a Mining Rig we checked eBay and found this rig   http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Bitcoin-Litecoin-Mining-Rig-1200MH-s-BTC-1-14MH-s-Litecoin-Fast-Gaming-PC-/271248813646?pt=Desktop_PCs&hash=item3f27b06e4e  (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Bitcoin-Litecoin-Mining-Rig-1200MH-s-BTC-1-14MH-s-Litecoin-Fast-Gaming-PC-/271248813646?pt=Desktop_PCs&hash=item3f27b06e4e)

Any idea what it is worth or how much he should pay. Or if you can recommend a rig that's under $1,000 that is worth buying.

Thanks

I found this on Newegg it comes with a 7790. It's for gaming which is okay. He also wants to use the PC for other stuff, so it won't be just for mining. He can always add another card if he wants. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883258049 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883258049)

I don't think a 7790 is very good for mining. You might want to consider either a Sapphire 7950 or a 7970. The last time I checked amazon had the 7970 for under $300.00.

Here's a nice comparison chart worth consulting before deciding on a GPU: http://litecoin.info/Mining_Hardware_Comparison

So he should just by a new PC with a enough power and add a card or two. He more or less wants to mine and use the PC for other work in his shop. He won't be overclocking etc..

I was telling him some shops/stores accept coins as payment, but he doesn't understand it enough, yet.  He was asking me how much profit he can make a month and I was telling him, you need to hold GLD for a year or more. I told him, look at it like stocks you  buy and hold. He said he has no luck with stocks, so I guess that was a bad example :)

Anyway I'll tell him he should buy a new PC with enough power and add a 7970 (or two).

If he just wants a gaming machine, and mining with a single card, then yea he can use a standard atx case with at least 400W supply and just get a single 7950, but this is not going to give room to expand.

It would be better to not buy a prebuilt machine (they come with [beep]ty psus and pc cases that don't work for mining), wasted money. He needs to invest in a good a power supply first like a lepa 1600 gold rating, or some other 1200W or higher supply.  Then find a motherboard with at least 4 or 5 pci-express or pci-1x slots.  And powered risers to get the cards spread out from each other. Then either design and build your own case or rig something up without a case. GPU miners generate a ton of heat. A couple 120mm fans are not going to cut it.
