A few weeks ago I was tinkering around with the server and disabled the openssl extension in the php server settings.
This commented line instantly broke all SMF email functionality for the forum. I was made aware of this just now by a user on Twitter.
Anyway, the problem is now resolved. I am sorry for any inconvenience this might have caused.
