Try solo mining a few hours and see how many blocks you get. If you get  an average of 1 block an hour thats good if not use a pool.

I'm actually pretty new to solo mining. When a block is found are you rewarded the amount right away? Or is there a confirmation process before being rewarded?

In solo mining there is a 128 block confirmation period.  Pools may have a similar confirmation period.

Over a long period of time, theoretically, solo and pool mining should result with the same amount of earnings.  Over the short run, pool mining will give lower but more frequent payouts, while solo mining will give larger less frequent payouts.  Pools have a fee, which will lower earnings slightly.
