Anyone know what EC2 is?

I was reading a post and someone told another person to buy an EC2 for mining. All I know it has something to do with CPU mining. Can anyone tell me what it is etc.? It sounds interesting and something I might try. I did a search but I have no idea what the person was talking about, so I don't even know what I'm looking for.

Well that's out of the question seems like to much work and I don't want to pay monthly fees.

I tried the c3.4xlarge instance today and got 70kh/s with Pooler's cpuminer. At $1.86 per hour its really not worth it. I get 40kh/s with my macbook.
