$3,000 to invest in mining rig. Any suggestions? Thank you
« on: January 04, 2014, 12:10:54 PM »
Greetings,

I would like to invest $3000.00 in a new rig specifically for mining.

I have spent the last couple hours researching around online and my head is starting to spin.

I would like to ask the advice of my fellow Goldcoin miners what they would do with the $3000.00 and what exactly they would buy.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Thank you for your time

Regards,
Romm

It is hard to say at this point seeing how most retailers have raised their prices. I would imagine that the 280X are most likely better bang for the bug. No need for expensive hardware to run it, just make sure the motherboard can support them as well as the power supply. I would think for that amount of investment you could get 8 of those GPUS and all other hardware required to run them. A 280x should be able to push out around 1000k/sec with the right settings so that would put you at 8MH.

I was looking around online quit a bit today and at newegg the price I found the 280x for was around $399.  If that is a good price I wouldn't be able to get 8 of them and keep my budget. If I am to find them for cheaper I would like to obviously. Do you recommend any other places to look?

Thank you for the advice!

Newegg is one of the main culprits for jacking up the pricing.  There are cheaper sources out there by $60+ if you look for them.  I dont wish to post it openly due to if they get swamped with orders I fear they will join the same price raising bandwagon.  But Google away.

I would hold off on buying a graphics card... Wait for the new R9 290s to come out (with aftermarket coolers) and see how they are priced.  Right now it's way over priced and I would rather use that money to buy GLD now and profit more short term.  Then once gpus drop in price, get in the mining game (since this is long term anyway).

If not, keep looking for decent prices on cards.  In my opinion, maybe $20-40 mark ups are "okay" but $100+ extra per card is ridiculous.  Snatch 7970s if you see them around $300 and 290s if it's near $400.

Trust me, I spent $3000 or so to build 2 rigs and I bought my cards at normal prices before it shot up like crazy.  I would wait and invest by buying GLD directly now, but that's just my 2 GoldCoins.
