New to the Mining Game
« on: December 05, 2013, 12:09:30 PM »
Hey, all. This is my first time messing around with any digital currency, so I have a few questions.

I've started CPU mining (I think?) at 9k and have managed 90 coins so far. My PC has a pair of 680s in SLI and I tried using cudaminer, but my goldcoin client wasn't showing an increase in speed. Worse, the computer got incredibly unresponsive. I ended up power cycling it when two of my three monitors made loud clicking sounds (!). Is this unusual? I'd like to put that horsepower to use, but not if it's risking my hardware.

Right now, I'm simply using the goldcoin client. I tried putting it into server mode and pointed cudaminer at it. Is this the wrong way to go?

I read something about welcome gifts. Is that offer still open, or am I late to the party? :)

Create a .bat script and use options like this:

cudaminer.exe -H 1 -d 0 -i 1,0,0 -l auto,F27x3,K28x4 -C 0,2,1 -o stratum+tcp://poolserver.com:3334 -O workername:password

I got an very old nvidia quadro working at 50kh/s like this. If you have two cards, add -d 0,1  or read the readme file.

You can try the above, but from my short experience mining you should try using guiminer v0.04 -scrypt version (easier) and instead of using the cards in SLI mine on them individually (the is no additional benefit from using the cards in SLI).  I found that when mining on the second card, I was able to use the computer/play games. Once I was done using my computer I turn on mining the first card so it can mine while I am away (you use separate workers). If you use it in SLI you computer will be unusable, until you stop mining. Also join a pool mining is much faster this way.

PS Welcome to the wacky world of GLD mining!

Manto's suggestion did the trick. I'm managing 320 kh/s using both GPUs. I have NOT turned on mining from the goldcoin client. This is fine? I'm getting a lot more speed with it turned off, but so far have not received confirmation from the client that my GPUs are doing anything either way.
