I was reading over the previous forum and found this interesting post of interest made by Gldcoin (original developer). I'm posting it for posterity and historical record.

I propose we change the GLD difficulty re-target - at approximately Block 22176 or 24192. This will require a hard fork in the block chain. We will need to get Cryptsy, and all pools to install the update first IMHO. Then, everyone should install the update immediately, but not after block 22176 or 23,000 (or whatever is decided). Once we hit block 22176, or 230000 (whatever is decided), anyone using the old wallets generated blocks and/or transactions will be incompatible with the new chain. It may be necessary to schedule the fork out to 23000+ only because of the difficulty attacks, but if everyone works together, possibly we can do this under he radar (via PM etc) initially before making a wide announcement.
All wallet balances on blocks prior to the fork will still be valid.
With that said, what should the difficulty re-target be in # of blocks. Currently, it is 2016
IMHO these are the positives and negatives:
Negatives:
2016: Not enough miners. There are individual Litecoin etc miners out there with more hashing power than all of GLD miners combined, and its prone to attacks and/or mining influx if the exchange rate climbs, improving profitability
1008: Same as above - could take a week for a difficulty change, and again its prone to attacks and/or mining influx if the exchange rate climbs, improving profitability
504: Same as above, but difficulty changes likely will be ever 2 - 3 days vulnerable to some difficulty attacks at present hashrate
252: difficulty changes likely in 1 - 2 days Limited possibility of difficulty attacks
126: difficulty changes daily if not sooner. Least possibility of difficulty attacks
Positives:
2016: none at this hashrate
1008: none at this hashrate
504: none at this hashrate, good size for say 100 mh
252: Limited possibility of difficulty attacks
126: No possibility of difficulty attacks - such attacks could be considered ordinary mining
