Goldcoin (GLD) Core Development Thread
« on: June 11, 2013, 06:43:39 AM »
As many of you are probably aware, we are working to secure a talented developer for fixing the code.

Ultimately we must put into place a development team so that the future of the coin never rests in the hands of a single individual. Once we get the immediate technical issues resolved and the network stabilized I feel it is critical that we get to work putting into place a mechanism that will prevent a single person from bringing the coin to its knees.

According to my sources, we need to start making some very critical decisions this week regarding the code. So let's get to work.

Do we have a list of things that need to be decided? Is it going to be community orientated as to what the features are? Lets get to work :)

Here's a quick list of off the top of my head:

1. How to notify users, pool operators, and exchanges.
2. What exact changes are needed in the code.
3. How to secure a secondary developer as backup?

I've been in touch with a developer, who has no time for this project, but did review the proposed changes made by Hyoshi and feels that the changes proposed are indeed sound.

What are the list of changes proposed though?

Here are some proposed changes from the Nibble developer from a previous thread:

All, I am the dev of "Nibble" - my coin has been near the top of coinchoose.com on and off for the last few weeks.  I can do whatever you want really with this coin.  Some ideas I have are to change the fork to 20,950 - its currently set to fork at 21k.  you guys will have to spread the word of the update, get cryptsy to install it and all that.

I would change the block time to 1 minute, make the difficulty retarget something like 250 blocks, make the max difficulty adjustment around 110% (makes attacks or spikes less effective or impacting), and change the coin maturity to 50 confirms - the current 100 for a coin with so few miners is insane.  I would keep the block reward at 500 but have it 1/2 every x amount of blocks (way out in the future)

These are not things the dev did wrong - its just that no coin is ever intended to be mined with under 10 mH/s total.

I can make these changes immediately and have a build for you tonight - I have dealt with gldcoin (we swapped nodes to improve both networks) and he told me that he will let me take over his dev duties.  He said that he just has no time at the moment, he's swamped at work, swamped at home or something.

The main thread at Bitcointalk needs regular amendment on the first page: and URGENTLY with the address of this forum !

gldcoin has that under his user control at bitcointalk.

Only gldcoin can do this, Microguy can you speak with him and get him to amended or lock the thread so a new one can be made with the correct information?

I think these changes are a good idea, however will changing the folk to 20950 be advise seeing we are so close to this block currently?

Ideally, the webmaster should just forward the entire domain to this forum. We also need to think about creating a new official thread on bitcointalk listing this website as the official forum.

I only have a minute, so I wanted to quickly demonstrate my stance on no more hard-forks. We are at 21938, and we have gotten 35 in the last 12 hours. At this rate, we should be done and at block 21k in a mere 24 hours. I believe rather than thinking about more hard-forks which would bring more hardship to the coin, we should instead just focus on building infrastructure and getting miners and such on the coin!

I agree, at this point, lets just wait for the fork at 21k because that's only 58 blocks away

You must be also careful not to attract to much attention going into the form so a hash rate attack is not deployed to raise the difficulty.

I think after this hard fork, a decision should be make regarding another hard fork and whether to change the block speed, difficulty adjustments etc

There is no reason not to do a hard fork if it will help the coin, and there are many things you can do to make it a popular coin to mine.  If its popular to mine, then investor's will want to buy gold which will raise the value, and open doors for the coin.

so im a little confused on what exactly happens at the hardfork. Is it just a diff change? Should we stop mining after hardfork? I think others out there don't know exactly what will happen and what miners should do.  Should we restart our mining rigs immediately after 21000 block? Anyone with any insight?

Mining becomes much much more profitable after hardfork, that's what happens.
