Goldcoin Application for iOS on iTunes?
« on: July 27, 2016, 02:10:58 PM »
Today, I noticed that Litecoin has an open source app for the iPhone. How difficult would it be to get this adapted to Goldcoin?

The team is currently putting together a bounty to cover the costs of the project. Any ideas about cost and development time?

Based on the name and it's Github repo, this app is forked from the Bitcoin Bread Wallet.

For cost, there is a $99 fee for the account to publish to the iTunes App Store.

How easy is it?  Not easy.  There are only a few people that have forked the Bread Wallet for other coins.  It requires knowledge of Objective C and the iOS library and of source the bitcoin/litecoin/goldcoin protocols.

I could probably do it, but there is still a learning curve and I don't have any of the hardware.  At this point, I am not motivated to learn the various libraries, etc.  Ideally, I would want to use a native Mac OS X system and an actual iOS device for debugging.

The code changes wouldn't be that difficult, because all that is needed to be changes are some goldcoin specific values and the Golden River and 51% defense.

Funny synchronicity - I did, too.
Let's make some noise on bitcointalk.org.

- who made the first MAC OS app for goldcoin ? (i guess we have one up ? )
- the newly invented MAC OS X (Yosemite for example ) is much more difficult for developing things, and a a lot of libraries have changed ( i can remember out of a conversation with akumaburn on a skype session :) ).

- would be nice to find someone out of the gld community for doing this :).

i can remember http://www.hashengineeringsolutions.com/ they got experience with coding wallets and stuff, we can ask them if they got experience with mac os wallets ?
(last post is from 1.1.2015 not sure if they are down)

I may try to find some devs that want to work with guidance from Akuma, Stouse.  I'm sure we could find folks that would want to put blockchain experience on their resumes.  It's getting to be a hot skillset in the banking industry.

I'd think we could find some volunteers that might be interested that have skills in Objective C and would like to learn blockchain dev technology.  I'll check around some in various places.

I would say it is a welcome development, even though i dont understand the technical behind it, it will be a plus if we can have that too. gold club is expanding globally and the use of iphone is growing.  from all indication when i shared Goldcoin has an app most of my friends in the usa , Europe use iphone they told me they cant find it there.

my suggestion is that we should not leave any potential market un taped, as long as we can make it happen i vote yes.

Bump.  :)

I'm seeing a lot of requests (particularly on Facebook) for the iOS application. Since Amir has indicated that he's planning to release a new codebase this fall that will support the Mac OS X, should we wait for that update before building the iOS app?

Would it be helpful if we could get some Mac hardware sent to both devs?

-  would love to see a "Ninja" release for this  :) then Amir can develop the Codebase when he have time without the pressure of a "deadline".

- just asking what will be the changes on the Codebase ?

-  guess the only thing what Goldclub "need"s actually is the IOS app ? and then a few days to test it and then release it on the  i/tunes/store ?  :)
(so if the IOS app got the higher priority like primary and update the Codebase as secondary, then it is maybe better to release the app first and then update?)
(will it make things easier for Amir and Stouse to seperate/combine this ?)

- just remember a conversation on skype session where we talked about "hackintoshs" which is MAC build with "normal" parts for a PC, this will be a bit cheaper i guess but i dont know if this hardware will be a problem for the development.

Regarding the iOS wallet:  http://www.hashengineeringsolutions.com/ is around, but they do not do iOS wallets.

Does the iOS app need to wait on the Codebase update?  No.  The app should still work.  The new Android app works on the old codebase, and it would work on the new codebase.  The New codebase would support bloom filtering, which would help both apps run better.

What will be the changes on the Codebase? That would depend on which version of Bitcoin we choose to fork.  Certainly newer ones support bloom filters, and the interface will differ somewhat on the client.  There would be a new blockchain database system and other things under the hood.

Would it be helpful if we could get some Mac hardware sent to both devs?   The answer is yes, but do the devs have time to do fork the bitcoin breadwallet for Goldcoin?  Do they know Objective C well enough.  Speaking for myself, its possible, but it take more than a few days to get it on the iOS store.  More like several months for development.  Also, the iOS store is harder to publish to than Google Play.  Apple requires that we have a company with various kinds of paperwork.  There is a learning curve to overcome.

Normally i would ask what that under the hood thing is, but hey, if you would tell me it would not be under the hood, right ?
- just saying that i dont like  these "under the hood" development things...but hey, i trust in you guys and hope the best  ;)

thx U again for answering all my questions, i really appreciate this kind of conversations with you  :)

Under the hood means anything about the inner workings of the Coin and the network that are transparent to most users.   Most users want to send and receive, backup and encrypt.  It is all documented at the Bitcoin.org website with respect to their changes with each update.  Similarly, most drivers just want their car to start and go and stop when they get to their destination.  However, they can look under the hood of their car at the engine and get the manuals and figure out how it all works.

https://bitcoin.org/en/release/v0.13.0 - One feature that is under the hood is the wallet.  Apparently, new users who install this version will be using an HD Wallet, just like the our android app and other apps.

You could say 'under the bonnet,' but that's probably not so cool. :D

I have purchased an iPad Mini, which I will use in the future to do development for iOS.  The GoldCoin iOS app is the first software to work on.

I might have something by the end of summer for testing.  It will need a good name:
  • breadwallet - gold
  • goldwallet

Submit your ideas here.
