If Distinguished Professor of Information Sciences and Technology at Penn State, John Carroll is correct, emerging alternative currencies like Dogecoin (DOGE) will replace Bitcoin in the near future.

According to Dr. Carrol, the only thing missing are some minor design adjustments and tinkering under the hood. He sees Bitcoin as the pioneer paving the way for other cryptocurrencies with less baggage.

Bitcoin became the brain child of those wanting to challenge the economic order in a positive way, but it also found headlines for its use as a way to fund terrorism, obtain illegal drugs, launder money, hijack computer systems, and to facilitate international crimes. He predicts this reputation will be the currency’s undoing.

"I don’t know whether becoming the currency of choice for murder-for-hire and drug deals helped them much. But it’s often the case that those early pioneers make missteps that are corrected by succeeding initiatives, which may be what will happen here. Historically, the first generation of a given innovation ultimately is not the one that persists."

He goes on to explain the social advantages of alternative currencies and how they facilitate social interactions, in addition to economic interactions. We all know that Dogecoin derives its value from the strength of its community. According to Carrol, that might be just what the doctored ordered.

"You’re offering services to people and receiving services from people, which reminds you that people are worthwhile, that they are essential."

So if you happen to be an early investor in Dogecoin (DOGE), or Goldcoin (GLD), or even Dash (DASH), you might want to buy some takeaway tonight with your alternative stash. Because if Carrol is right, a few years from now we might all be celebrating your crazy two-million-dollar pizza purchase.
