GoldCoin DNS Seed (useful for the Android App)
« on: February 11, 2017, 12:32:07 AM »
For future development of the GoldCoin Network, especially if mobile app usage increases significantly, it will be very helpful to have one or more DNS Seeds.

A DNS Seed is a server that crawls the GoldCoin Network and compiles a list of active nodes that can be served to the Android App or other similar apps or programs.  This will prevent the app requiring updates to its list of active nodes.  It will simply ask the DNS Seeder to give it some nodes to connect to.

Go to https://chainz.cryptoid.info/gld/#!network and look at the network stats for the node used to run their block explorer for GoldCoin.  Most connections are the mobile app (3 versions).  If the number of app users increases into the thousands, then many may have connectivity issues.

The source code for the seeder is here:
https://github.com/sipa/bitcoin-seeder
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=599623.0

Is anyone interested in setting up a server for this?

Yes, it turns out that I am very interested in making this project happen.

I'm also very interested in this project.  :)

This morning, I'll convert our VPS hosting account into a developer account. Then we can configure a new server for the seeder.

Status update.  We have created a new VPS for this particular endeavor.

The seeder was compiled and is running on the vps.

It is currently crawling the network:

Code: [Select]
root@dnsseed:~/bitcoin-seeder# ./dnsseed -h dnsseed.gldcoin.org -n 168.235.95.119 -m [email protected]
Supporting whitelisted filters: 0x1,0x5,0x9,0xd
Starting 4 DNS threads for dnsseed.gldcoin.org on 168.235.95.119 (port 53).......done
Starting seeder...done
Starting 96 crawler threads...done
[17-03-12 04:03:21] 4/95 available (64 tried in 66s, 10 new, 21 active), 0 banned; 0 DNS requests, 0 db queries

There will be a server called dnsseed.gldcoin.com.

It is currently propagating through out the world.  More information will be available on March 13.

https://dnschecker.org/#NS/dnsseed.gldcoin.com (5 locations  are working)

After running the DNS seeder for 1 day, it found 8 nodes and 4 were good enough to be served out to requesting clients.

Code: [Select]
80.86.85.65:8121 GOOD
192.169.7.18:8121 GOOD inetrader.com
24.49.180.69:8121 GOOD
24.54.97.47:8121 GOOD [vps.gldcoin.com]
74.208.83.156:8121 BAD
107.161.23.121:8121 BAD [vps.gldcoin.com] [seed.gldcoin.com]
88.179.189.139:8121 BAD
176.126.60.91:8121 BAD

One address that is returned by seed.gldcoin.com didn't make the list:  149.202.121.129

https://www.whatsmydns.net/#NS/dnsseed.gldcoin.com - Reports 1 server that can resolve the DNS.
https://dnschecker.org/#NS/dnsseed.gldcoin.com/vps1.gldcoin.com - Reports 5 servers that can resolve the DNS.

There has been no change in 2 days.  Not sure if we set it up correctly.

Today, I set up goldcoin.stousenet.com to point to vps1.gldcoin.com as a Name Server.  Lets see what happens.

We are getting good results now.  Had some help from another developer from another coin.  Our VPS had its own nameserver thing going on and that was conflicting with the name server I wanted to install (the dns-seeder).

Now it is resolved.

nslookup dnsseed.gldcoin.com

Here is a report on the DNS Seeder:  It is still running and currently returns 5-6 nodes from the network.  The android wallet is connecting to 4 nodes, which is up from the maximum of 3 earlier.  The android wallet will only connect to nodes or nodes from seeds that are hard coded in the app.  The app doesn't crawl the network and get other IP addresses of other nodes from the peers that it connects to.  This behavior is not the same as the GoldCoin desktop client or daemon - both of these do query peers for other nodes.  In the next week or so, an update to the android wallet will be released.

Based on good test results, the android app will be updated to include this dns-seeder to get more peers.
