Litecoin is Silver to Bitcoin's Gold? No So Fast Mister
« on: September 10, 2013, 04:33:39 PM »
This was a reply I made in this Bitcointalk thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=291860.0

Visions from my fabulous crystal ball.......

There is a common (and correct) theory that once digital currencies become prevalent in our society, there will be a handful of digital currencies commonly used. For example, in today's marketplace the vast majority of transactions are conducted using Visa and Mastercard. Since Bitcoin is by far the biggest and most well known digital currency and litecoin the second, a simple analogy was made since gold is more valuable than silver. But will this analogy hold?

In the future, you are going to see three currencies dominating the marketplace. The great thing about the current infrastructure build-out is that the point-of-sale devices currently being propagated can easily be modified to accept additional digital currencies. Like Visa and Mastercard, there are very little technical differences between these various currencies. For example there are practically no differences between Visa and Mastercard yet they are the most widely used forms of payment on the planet.

What you will see in the future will be three coins dominating the marketplace with Goldcoin (GLD) being first, Bitcoin (BTC) being second, and another yet-to-be determined coin (possibly litecoin) dominating third position. The name "Gold" brings instant value recognition to every human being on earth and beyond. It is this reason that Goldcoin will rise to the top.

Ironically, in the not so distant future Bitcoin will be the silver to Goldcoin's gold. It is simply a matter of time.

Crypto-currencies, above all, are a technological revolution. Bitcoin has a serious prime-mover advantage and has the most secure blockchain. It has the best developers, by far, working on various aspects and expanding the protocol. It will be hard to beat just with a 'better' name.

Obviously the name is not going to win it for us alone. So we don't plan on sitting idly by waiting for victory to happen. We have a great development team, a strong community, and a will to win. We are innovating daily and growing by leaps and bounds.

Your conclusions about the number of the dominant cryptos are not necessarily true in the long run. I think we will see corporate, regional or community cryptos pegged to the economic output of the issuing organization.
If we are thinking about decentralized currencies then don't stop half way :). BTW running exchanges will be the big business :D.
