« on: October 04, 2013, 08:34:01 AM »
Is it possible to recover my wallet using the address I have? I lost it in an HD crash.

Thanks,

Eric

It's possible, but you'd need to be sure not to format the drive beforehand.

The best way to do it is using a boot CD along with isobuster(http://www.isobuster.com/), alternatively you could use recuva(http://www.piriform.com/recuva).

search for a .dat file,

Good luck.

The hard drive is trashed. I tried to run a recovery on it and it was a no go. Im assuming that all my Gldcoins are pretty much gone. I have the address from when I got the 10000 gldcoins for 10 dollars promotion. Theres no way to use the address to recover what was in that wallet?

Thanks again,

Eric

There is no way to extract a private key from the public key. It is a one way process.

Keep a backup of all your wallet files on some sort of removable media (A dedicated USB stick works great)

Edited Post: Did not realize that BIP 0032 was not implemented in Bitcoin yet and therefore probably not implemented in other coins.

Is there a way for me to store my wallet on a flash drive and move it to different computer?

Yes. Install the client on the new computer and then copy the wallet.dat file from your c:\users\username\appdata\roaming\goldcoin (gld)\ folder to the flash drive and then into the corresponding folder on the new computer.

This is assuming you're using windows and don't have coins in the wallet of the new computer.

The first computer that has my wallet, the one where you sent me 200 GLD, is a Mac. The other computer, that I can be mobile with, is a Notebook type with windows.

On Mac the wallet.dat file is located in your Documents directory. You would just move this file to your new computer. Not sure if there is a difference between the wallet file on mac and windows. Would need to test with a blank wallet. I will test this later and upload results.

EDIT: The Mac location for the wallet.dat is not in your document folder that is the backup if you created one. The location is /Users/"username"/Library/Application\ Support/GoldCoin\ \(GLD\)/wallet.dat. Sorry for the confusion. Hope this helps.

Great thanks, I've been reading about the unique process of being able to move a wallet offline. Seems complicated and time consuming other than that well worth the time.
