Where did my coins go?
« on: November 07, 2013, 10:04:20 PM »
I do not know how this happened. Updated my client yesterday and ran the wallet. I closed the program immediately and went to copy IN my wallet file from storage. After it copied I opened the wallet to let is sync and download all the block info. So I leave me computer, didn't come back all night. I go to my computer today and see all my coins sent to some address while I was away from computer letting it sync. I never did this. Did the wallet make a new wallet or something? I noticed the addresses have changed to begin with E but my wallet began with D. The address it sent to began with E as well.  Can someone please help, it was a good amount of coin so I'd like to recover as soon as possible. Anything would be great and appreciated!

When you say you copied your wallet from storage are you referring to the wallet.dat file?

Depending on what version you were using before it's possible that you have placed this file into the wrong directory on your machine. Can you tell us the folder where you copied the .DAT file?

I put my wallet.dat file in the correct location under app data\roaming\goldcoin (GLD), this is the only gold coin folder I have under roaming folder.

Is it possible that someone had physical access to your machine without your consent?

If this were me, I would disconnect my machine from the WAN immediately and complete a full system scan looking for anything that's not supposed to be there. Then once you're confident that you have made your machine safe, try moving all your wallet.dat files into the specified folder one by one to check their balances.

my gold coin balance was sent to an address that has never had any transactions, not only that it hasn't been claimed yet according to chain info, something is not right here!

No one has access to my PC.I am an IT professional and am pretty good at IT security

Post the transaction ID and the address and I will ask the DevTeam to have a look. Also please confirm your client version. Thanks.

Your transaction occurred in block 550XX

This is way too old to be the consequence of any updates we have released.

I'm sorry to say but the only ways for someone to spend your coins is if they have your wallet.dat file, or if they have your private key, or if you've used the same address more than once.

ECDSA is too weak to use more the same key for more than one transaction. I recommend you read this to find more:

http://www.coindesk.com/developers-find-android-flaw-that-makes-bitcoin-wallets-vulnerable-to-theft/

This is common at the moment to all crypto-currencies as the flaw originates in Bitcoin's security.

We have considered ways around this but we are too much in our infancy to properly implement such a change.

Perhaps when goldcoin finally hits that $1 per coin mark  8)

It may be possible that your wallet had to generate new addresses though for some reason (maybe the old address was corrupt so it sent them to itself).

Try to start your client with -rescan option indicated this will search the blockchain for any missing transactions to do with your wallet file.
